Mare Shoes is a flagship boutique located along a fashionable downtown Fifth Avenue shopping block. This design and distribution company has outlets in the United States and Europe. The project addressed the design of all interior spaces, fixtures, furniture and the storefront.
The architectonic strategy incorporates the fundamental characteristics of the product: color, layering of materials, and comments on the sculptural nature of shoes.
The narrow and deep interior space is flanked on both sides by shelves the plasticity of which confers to the vertical planes a hieroglyphic quality and display shoes in a dramatic setting. The incised cuts in the new wall surfaces allow the shelves to alternatively recede and protrude from this new skin. The folds and cuts in the ceiling plane reveal fragments of an urban archeology juxtaposed to the new mechanical system. This double spatial strategy draws the eye into the full depth of the store. Lighting and mirrors emphasize and reveal architectonic episodes and the layered space. The cash/wrap counter is lit internally and glows white. Beyond, on the store’s back wall facing the entry, a rear-lit glass plane slowly changes color from top to bottom, attracting attention from the passers-by.
The play of dark shadows against the white background brings forth the plasticity and depth of the layered elements and allows attention to focus on the color of the shoes on display.
