Founder and principle of the SAA, Stephen Alton is responsible for directing of all aspects of the firm including design, development, and financial planning. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design in 1985 with Bachelor’s degrees in both Fine Arts and Architecture. He regularly serves as visiting critic on university juries and served for five years as Professor for the fourth year studios in the Interior Design Department of Parson's School of Design, New York City.

A licensed architect in New York State, Mr. Alton attends professional conferences and seminars and engages in developing publications of architectural books about design and various other related topics. Since the firm's founding in 1994, he has been responsible for the expansion of the firm's three studios; NYC, Shanghai, and M.A.R.S., and continues to lead the practice's growth into other markets and fields of expertise. Alton regularly post blog entries to the M.A.R.S. site covering topics of interest to the firm including sustainability, China architecture, and critiques of the architectural field.

Mr. Alton has vast experience in the residential multi-unit, and hotel sectors, and has developed projects from inception thru completion in all project types. He has worked for 18 years with leading development companies in the world and leads this detail and service oriented practice. Alton has received awards for architectural design, interior design, and lighting design and his work is seen regularly in books, magazines and television shows.
